End of the World Lighthouse

The interior of the island did not remain known until 1879, year in which the expedition of the lieutenant of the Navy Ramon Serrano Montaner it crossed from the Bay Big People up to the Bay San Sebastian in the Atlantic Ocean.
More than 4.000 native onas or selk'nam were living their pampas esteparias, that cover it almost completely from the mouth of the strait up to the first buttresses of Darwin's Mountain chain - on the south-, where the bushes appear and then the thick forest Magellan’s. They were nomadic tribes, of burly print and great stature, skilful with the sling, the arch and the arrow, instruments that them were helping to hunt gumps and birds. Besides they were hostile to any interference in its territory; for almost half century they pushed back the attempts of penetration that were organizing in the fragile colony of Punta Arenas. In his honor, the first navigators baptized the bay with the name of Big People.
In 1945 oil of the well sprouted springs, to the north of the island. This find determined the transformation of the north sector of the island, on which they were construct you new ways, pipelines, gas pipelines, towers of perforation, populations and plants of storage and production. From 1976 also there is extracted oil of the waters of the Strait of Magellan, with platforms of perforation and submarine extraction.
