The inmigrants in Magallanes

The Croatian-Dalmatian migratory movement, that achieved its maximum point of expression between ends of the 19th century and the First World War, had its expression in Chile, mainly, in two regions: the northern one, around the city of Antofagasta, and the southern one, in both margins of the Strait of Magellan.

The main migratory current stemmed from the Island of Brac. This migration conincide with the beginning of the first one great world economic crisis and, in specific case of Brac, with the apparition of the phylloxera, illness that affected the vineyards of the island, main economic source for its inhabitants. On the whole you left of Brac almost 8.400 people.

Since such enormous human movement, that had notorious connotation inmigratoria for the region of Magallanes, has passed a century, we find to a century of the medium point of the migratory period referred in the previous paragraph.

What has happened with the descent of those Dalmatians that arrived al narrow of Magallanes when thousands of embarkations crossed it yearly? Or, ¿it is possible to quantify the number of Dalmatian descendants, after three or four generations?

According to studies carried out, the number of people with croatian surname they reach to 1.141 and 408 people exist that have the two surnames of the same origin, being thus the total of surnames of 1.549, appearing 836 surnames as paternal and 713 like maternal. These last, naturally, they will be lost in some years more, since they will pass to the descent only those that act as paternal.

Along with passing more than a hundred years since the arrival of the croatian immigrants, Only they have not lasted in the daily life of the magallanic region the surnames of their descendants, also many of them carry nowadays croatian names or names influenced by the presence of the immigration, whether in original form or adapted to the fonía Spanish. Also it is possible to observe that other people (without surnames of croatian origin) carry these names.

Some of these names they are: Aleksandar (2) Andro Blagomier Blahienco (2) Bogdam Boriboj Boris (6) Chedomir Cvita Danica Darko Daslav Davor Dinka Divna Doimo Drago Drazenko Dusan (2) Dusica Eslavia Estefan Igor Ilinka Iván (8) Ivo Jazna Jerka Josko Kleme Kresimir Krnoslav Kruno Kusma Ladislav (2) Ljubomir Marinka Marko Milan (3) Milenak Milenka Milivoj (2) Milivoy Milka (2) Miloslava Miodrag (2) Miroslava Mladen Nadia Nadja Nasha Nedeljka Nevenko Niki Radoslav Roko Rudi Rusmir (2) Simica Slava Stanko Stoyam Svetko Tomislav Uros Verislav Vesna (2) Vicko Vinka (3) Vinko Vladimir Vladimiro (7) Vlady Yagoda Yerka Yerko Yugoslav Zdenka Zdenko Zenia Zvonimir.

To a century of the arrival of the Croatians to Magallanes, mainly originating from Dalmatia, in the universe of study is verified that a 4,85% have Dalmatian descent.

A large quantity of surnames they appear with a different writing to their original one. This deformation is not product of the time but of the erroneous transcription of some letters of the croatian alphabet, at the moment when the immigrants arrived at the region, and to that many of which brought even their documents of trip (extended in most cases in German or Italian language) with a different spelling.

(2), (3), etc. they correspond to the quantity by name registered in the zone.
